What Should You Consider when Dealing with Aging Parents?

Writer's picture: Derick CoffeyDerick Coffey

As your parents age, they will lean on you more to deal with their affairs. Technology will begin to outpace their understanding/comprehension, and you will need to guide them through these obstacles. Imagine how shocked your grandparents were when they could use a debit card instead of writing a check.

Technology, coupled with an older generation, is also ripe for scamming. Scams have evolved greatly from the Nigerian Prince requesting money. Now, scams are hidden in text messages and websites that target vulnerable demographics. As your parents age you should become increasingly involved with their financial situation to ensure they are making sound decisions.

If you are a Power of Attorney, you will be responsible for your parents' affairs if they are no longer able to take care of them by themselves. Knowing the ins and outs of your parent's finances will make your job easier as you transition into the POA role. Use this checklist as a conversation starter.
